When I was in high school, my mom and I discussed “The Secret History” by Donna Tartt (Alfred A. Knopf, 1992) more than any other novel. It was first published 30 years ago, so I’m not sure why it is being sold at my local Target today (on an endcap for a cashier, no less). If you live in or near Chanhassen, Minnesota, go pick up a copy. Basically, the novel is an inverted detective story that takes place at an elite liberal arts college in Vermont. If you’ve ever wondered if people really get away with murder, read this book and know the guilt murderers endure never leaves them. Murder is a double-edged sword and ends in tragedy for everyone involved.
